The Mercedes-Benz W31 type G4 was a German three-axle off-road vehicle first produced by Mercedes-Benz as a staff/command car for the Wehrmacht in 1934. The cars were designed as a seven-seat touring car or closed saloon, and were mainly used by upper echelons of the Nazi regime in parades and inspections, as they were deemed too expensive for general Army use. Mercedes-Benz produced fine motor cars in Germany and many of these cars were adapted for military service as needed. One such adaptation was the Type G4 which was a seven passenger saloon convertible that was based on the commercial model 770. The G4 was initially powered by a 100 horsepower engine. Like all Mercedes-Benz cars used in rallies in this era, the large “Tailfin” saloons were very closely based on the series production vehicles. (from DaimlerChrysler Press Release) This car is an extremely rare one: a 1939 Mercedes-Benz G4 offroader in original condition, today owned by the Spanish royal family. The explicit restoration order placed with the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center was correspondingly unusual. The G4 kits in 1/35th scale The first version of the Mercedes G4 in 1/35 scale was released by a Japanese manufacturer named Tilt in the ‘70s under the title “Mercedes-Benz TyP G4 / W31 S.Gl.Pkw.” I couldn’t find too much information about the kit except for a pretty good online review.
Hi all,I haven't found all that much information about the Mercedes G4 on this forum, so it would be nice to get some input from the Mercedes experts here. We all know the specs from the Oswald book, but I would like to find out more details about these beasts:
How many of them had 6-wheel drive?
How may were armored?
Who had 'personal' G4s back then?
How many of them survive today? Does Mercedes Benz have one in their collection?
I know the Spanish royal family has Franco's car, and there is one in the Sinsheim museum in Germany, and one (or three?) used to be in Ralph Englestad's Imperial Palace collection in Las Vegas - but what happened to the rest of them? Were the ones that Dean Kruse tried to sell last year the former Vegas cars? Where are they now??
I think the fabulous G4s deserve their own thread here, so let's see where it goes.
