According to Ford, the new MyFord Touch 2.0 will be installed in all 2013 models equipped with the system, including Lincoln vehicles that offer the similar MyLincoln Touch. For drivers of Ford and Lincoln vehicles equipped with the original version of MyFord Touch, the automaker says it will offer a software update that takes less than an hour. Ford should offer the Sync 3 system as an upgrade to users of MyFord Touch. Since it is new hardware that has an associated cost, it should be offered as a purchasable part for dealer install, like the Sync Accessory kit was, so Ford owners can enjoy the newer Sync system with improved functionality. SYNC 3 to launch in North America on 2016 Ford Escape and Fiesta – on sale late summer 2015 – providing a safer way for Ford customers to connect their smartphones while keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.
With the debut of SYNC 3 for Escape and Fiesta, Ford is launching its newest in-car connectivity technology as an option in one of its highest-volume vehicles, Escape, and in its most affordable car, Fiesta.

Ford SYNC – the industry’s first system to widely and most affordably offer voice-activated technology to control smartphones – is becoming more capable by minimizing the number of steps needed to carry out commands. Selecting music, making a call or searching for a destination is easier than ever, thanks to SYNC 3’s simpler command structure. Users will be able to access Siri on their iPhones directly from the steering wheel controls.
Ford was first to bring voice control to in-vehicle apps with AppLink™, and the experience is further improved with SYNC 3. AppLink™ was not available on the newer MyFord Touch system and didn’t get to be used by a lot of Ford owners.
The new SYNC 3 is an app-based program, which is a departure from the earlier Sync version. AppLink allows customers to connect their smartphone to their vehicle and control compatible apps using voice commands or buttons on the vehicle display screen.
AppLink automatically discovers smartphone apps including Spotify, Pandora, Glympse, NPR One and iHeart Auto (iHeartRadio’s automotive app), and displays each app’s unique graphics and branding. Music and news apps are automatically displayed along with other media sources – just like AM/FM or SiriusXM.
Additionally, when connected to an Apple iPhone, SYNC 3 offers seamless integration of Siri Eyes-Free capability. Drivers can seek Siri’s help by holding down SYNC’s Push to Talk steering wheel button – much as they would on an iPhone to initiate a Siri session.
SYNC 3 is optimized for hands-free use. Plus, the all-new capacitive touch screen technology offers an experience similar to a smartphone or tablet. Quicker response to touch, as well as voice commands and smartphone-like gestures including pinch-to-zoom and swipe are central to SYNC 3 – along with crisp, modern graphics.
On-screen complexity is reduced and control options used most are prioritized. The home screen features three zones – Navigation, Audio and Phone. Tile-like icons dominate, with a quick access function tray along the bottom making for a more straightforward user experience.
Phone contacts are searchable via a simple swipe of the finger to scroll through the alphabet. With One Box Search, users can look up points of interest or enter addresses in much the same way they use an Internet search engine.
As with earlier generations of the technology, SYNC 3 provides subscription-free emergency service 911 Assist®.
The customer’s Bluetooth-connected phone is used to dial 911 in the event of a significant accident – alerting first responders with vehicle location. With SYNC 3, the car relays additional information – including if airbags deploy, whether the crash is front, side, rear or rollover, and the number of safety belts detected in use – to help emergency call-takers dispatch appropriate resources to the scene.
SYNC 3 now also features the ability to update software via Wi-Fi. Once a vehicle is set up with credentials for a home Wi-Fi network accessible in a customer’s driveway or garage, it can automatically download updates. Existing Ford owners may have the “basic” Sync system, or the newer MyFord or MyFord Touch system, however those users will not be able to “upgrade” to Sync 3. This system will only be available as installed on new models. Ford plans to have the Sync 3 system available on all of its line – especially by 2017. See your Ford dealer for more details.

It’s here!!! The MyFord Touch version 3.6 is available by going to the new website support.ford.com — and from initial quick tests… everything seems to work seamlessly and smoothly.
The new software update for SYNC with MyFord Touch systems includes all the improvements from previous updates, plus additional benefits, such as:

Ford Motor Company periodically releases SYNC® software updates to deliver the most advanced technology and this version was designed to hit some of the issues that have been out there — especially with ease of use.
Updates are tailored to your SYNC with MyFord Touch® system, and will vary based on your system’s current software level. The best way to find out what’s available is to log in to your SYNC Owner account at support.ford.com If you haven’t opened an account at this site, then open one up. The site will tell you if you need the update and guide you through the entire process.
Here is a quick overview of the steps to start the software upgrade:
Step 1 – Connect a USB drive to your computer. Before you begin, please make sure your USB drive is empty, has at least 2GB of free space, and is not password protected.
Step 2 – Get the update. The software download process requires your browser to have Java installed and enabled. If your browser prompts you to run a Java application from Ford Motor Company, please click “Run” to continue. You may also receive a security warning. Please click “Don’t Block” to continue. Be patient.. it may take 10 minutes or more to download the software update. And, using other programs during the download will slow down the process.
Now, take the USB from your computer and go to your vehicle…
Step 3– Take the USB drive with the software updates to your vehicle. Turn on your vehicle, and then turn on the radio.
Make sure your car is in a well-ventilated area. Your vehicle will need to be turned on, with the engine running between 25 to 35 minutes. Make sure that your vehicle is not in Accessory mode.
Plug the USB drive in to your vehicle’s USB port. The system should start the download process within a few seconds…
With the MyFord Touch system, now let your vehicle run and the entire download process takes about 25 minutes. While the process is going on, remove the SYNC system from your phone or device. You will have to pair it again after the installation.
SYNC displays “Installing Application” during the process. Do not remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle while this update is in progress. Shortly after installation has begun, SYNC says “Installation Complete.” Ignore this message. It refers to a specific phase of the installation, not the overall update process. While the update is loading, SYNC will not recognize your mobile phone or media device.You will notice the software upgrade goes through at least five “sessions” of installing software and then “rebooting.” Be patient. Let the system run through the process and, as stated, in about 25 to 30 minutes will bring up the screen pictured above and once you push OK the process will end.

Once you have installed the SYNC software updates, you’ll need to pair your phone again. To complete the process, take the USB drive to your computer to report the successful installation (at the support.ford.com website).
You will notice that the MyFord Touch system seems more intuitive after the update. You will see a reference page appear after you push the Voice button that will assist in using the Voice commands.
Best of all, you could be listening to the Radio, using the Climate control or the Destination features and you can simply say “Call (contact name) and the Sync system knows you want to make a call without having to first say “Phone.” However, you will have to refer first to the mode if you want to go from Audio to Climate, for example.

More on the use of the upgrade after some “field testing.” For now, grab an empty USB jump drive and take “new control” of your MyFord Touch system. For those who aren’t comfortable with the self-installation process, please contact your Ford Service Department or your Ford sales representative.
